LIVING GREEN

In 2011 we will be offering another alternative fabric.  Keep watching for news!

Should you Bamboo?

green4greens has gone against the current trend of polyester and nylon performance fabrics to bring to you a more natural fabric, one that has all the traits of a performance fabric but is luxuriously soft and more environmentally friendly.  It‘s a combination of rayon of bamboo and organic cotton especially designed for golf wear.  We are not the first to promote bamboo fabrics but we have improved the fabrics having done a great deal of research into fabric combinations and fabric weights. In our test marketing, ladies loved the comfort and soft feel of the fabric!

Performance fabrics with a natural feel!

Bamboo:

  1. Absorbent
  2. Natural Ultra-violet protection – up to 50%
  3. Anti-microbial
  4. Retains shape without Spandex.
  5. Bamboo grows rapidly and naturally without any pesticides, herbicides or fertilizers.
  6. The extensive root system of bamboo holds soil together, prevents soil erosion, and retains water in the watershed.
  7. Bamboo plants absorb about 5 times the amount of carbon dioxide (a primary greenhouse gas) and produces about 35% more oxygen than an equivalent stand of trees.

(Organic) Cotton:

  1. Anti-cling
  2. Natural feel
  3. No pesticides in the air or in the fabric

The cotton in our blend is organic cotton.  No pesticides were used when growing the cotton which means that no pollutants were added to the atmosphere.  Organic cotton does cost more, but we think it is worthwhile.  The manufacturer has provided a copy of the USDA certification for organic cotton and certification for bamboo.

Attributes associated with Bamboo fabrics

We’ve done a lot of research on Bamboo fabric in addition to the information provided by the manufacturer. While doing the research, we found multiple references to National Fabric tests that verify the properties of Bamboo.  We could not find the National Fabric test results; therefore, the following findings are based on personal testing of these products and certificates provided by our manufacturer:

Bamboo is the fastest reproducing plant and it grows naturally.  There are no pesticides used in growing bamboo or in growing organic cotton.  The manufacture has provided 2008 and 2009 certificates regarding testing for harmful substances.

We have tested samples of these golf shirts in hot and humid Texas and in the gym and found these golf shirts to be cooler than man-made fabrics.  Man-made fabrics stick to the body when perspiring.  This rayon of bamboo/cotton blend does not stick.   These shirts absorb moisture and ventilate keeping more so than cotton alone.

The manufacturer has provided a copy of the germicidal certificate.  We tested this property by leaving a damp sample golf shirt in the hamper for a week, again in hot, humid Texas.  The shirt did not have an odor at the end of the week.  Also after several wearings we have not noticed any perspiration smells or stains. This is due to a natural property of bamboo.

It is difficult to qualify this as a unique characteristic in any fabric given that some fabrics are specially designed and marketed to allow sun through the material.

When wearing these shirts we did notice the absence of a sunburn line right at the edge of the sleeve that we experience with other shirts, leading us to believe the UV protection property. This is also a natural property of bamboo.

We have washed sample shirts many times to test the fading and have been pleased with the results. Due to the natural anti-bacterial property of bamboo, no detergent is needed when washing these shirts.  This assists in the resistance to fading.

  • Shrinkage:

We have noticed that this blend does not seem to shrink as much as cotton shirts.  Even so we have added extra length to the shirts.
